ASF audio and music file format

Advanced Systems Format (ASF) also known as Advanced Streaming Format is Microsoft's proprietary digital audio or video container format. Audio and video content compressed with special codecs can be stored in an ASF file and played back with the media player that has appropriate codec.

ASF is an extensible file format designed to store synchronized multimedia data. It supports advanced multimedia capabilities including extensible media types, component download, and scaleable media.

The most common files contained within an ASF file are Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video (WMV). Both may use the .ASF extension if desired.

ASF files can also contain objects representing metadata, such as the artist, title, album and genre for the audio track much like the ID3 tags of MP3 files.
